Spool Cart Campground

Campground Description:  Spool Cart Campground is owned and operated by the U.S. Forest Service.  Spool Cart Campground is a fisherperson's dream.  Imagine RV camping or tent camping along the Grande Ronde River and being able to catch bull trout and (seasonally) steelhead from your lawn chair.  Even without the fishing, Spool Cart offers river wading for the kids and bird watching for the adults.  Spool Cart Campground offers 9 fully paved campsites for either RV camping or tent camping.  Convenience store like shopping is available in Starkey, 3 miles north or full shopping and restaurants are available in La Grande, 24 miles east.  Open May through Early November.  Reservations are not possible.

Directions:  From Interstate 84 Eastbound or Westbound - Follow I-84 towards Le Grande.  Take exit 252 (8.9 miles north of La Grande) and turn onto Highway 244 westbound.  Follow Highway 244 west for approximately 11.8 miles to the Starkey turnoff which is Forest Road 51.  Follow Forest Road south for approximately 4.7 miles to the entrance to Spool Cart Campground (on the left (west) side of the road).

Fishing:  Yes.  On the banks of the Grande Ronde River, Spool Cart is known for fine catches of bull trout.  Seasonally, steelhead are a prized catch

Astronomy Opportunities:  Not at Spool Cart Campground.  There are too many tall trees

Nearby Golfing:  The nearest golfing is in Union, Oregon, 38 miles east
